According to an online survey of more than 1,500 Netmums members with children under the age of 16:
- More than four-fifths of mothers and fathers have caught young children repeating offensive words or phrases from songs without knowing what they mean.
- A quarter said boys thought women wanted men to be “into violence and gangsta culture.”
- One in 13 also reported their children copying Miley Cyrus’s “twerking” performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.
- Almost nine in ten complained modern pop stars were “far more explicit” than those from their own youth.
- Only one in 50 parents agreed with pop acts’ claims that their behavior is “empowering.” More than half said they were more like porn stars.
Interesting study, from a demographic that is probably far more parentally involved than the average; therefore, the results are even extra disturbing: especially the four-fifths of parents who report catching kids repeating lyrics – and these days, they are singing about such wholesome things as bondage from Rihanna’s “S&M,” anal sex from Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” and hardcore drug taking from Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop.”
