“A recent study shows Catholics in the US are more liberal about homosexuality and gay marriage than white evangelical Protestants. Work done by the Public Religion Research Institute, released in April, showed less than half of US Catholics, 49%, saw gay sex between two adults as ‘morally wrong.’ While an overwhelming majority, 78%, of white evangelical Protestants consider sexual relations between same gender adults as morally wrong. When it comes to gay marriage, only 37% of US Catholics oppose it; yet 69% of white evangelical Protestants are against same sex marriage.”
Author’s note: One of the things I attempted to accomplish in the writing of my book was to lift the veil of confusion and down-right lies which has descended upon many in the public concerning the reality of gay sex. This is something that I can appreciate and understand, because, myself, coming from a rather sheltered Catholic school background, was completely unprepared for what I found in San Francisco. What I knew about gay sex had all been learned from pornography. By my estimation, it could be sweaty, loud, and occasionally painful, but always incredibly satisfying. Yet, the truth was ugly, bloody, and physically and emotionally traumatic. In fact, uber-gay advocate Randy Shilts once wrote in his opus “And the Band Played One,” concerning the sex lives of gay men: “It was as if these people…were now making their sexuality utterly separate from themselves. Their bodies were tools through which they could experience physical sensation. The complete focus on the physical aspect of sex meant constantly devising new, more extreme sexual acts because the experience relied on heightened sensory rather than emotional stimulation.” Similarly, gay marriage advocate and author Gabriel Rotello wrote this about the gay sex scene: “Among a dedicated and significant core of urban gay men, the spiraling escalation of the seventies had produced a culture of unprecedented sexual extremism. But rather than sating desires, it seemed to fuel them toward even more escalation.” Even a Howard Stern Show reporter, at the notorious San Francisco Folsom Street Fair, was dumb-founded by the reality of gay sex: “This was by far the most difficult event I’ve had to cover. The fair was like an all gay Mardi Gras jammed packed with naked men. The smell was indescribable. It was a combination of sweat, leather, body odor and man ***. Many of the attendees openly stroked their own genitalia, fondled each other, and whipped each other. This event was like a combination of Sodom and Gomorrah and Thunder Dome.” Because of this actuality, gay men are 160X more likely to contract HIV compared to heterosexual men; gay men are 46X more likely to contract syphilis that heterosexual me; and anal sex is 18X more efficient at transmitting HIV than vaginal intercourse; most tragically, young gay men accounted for 90% of all new HIV infections among their age group. Catholics: Is this what you think is morally acceptable?
