Giving Up Porn For Lent

Several readers have contacted me and asked for prayers because they have given up watching porn for Lent. While I am always happy to pray for their endeavors, I have also advised them that “sacrificing” porn as a Lenten observance is probably not a good idea. First of all: one should not be watching porn anyway; especially since masturbation, which is also a grave sin in and of itself, almost always accompanies porn viewing. Secondly, this gritting of teeth, in order to abstain from porn for 40 days, may cause a porn explosion on Easter Sunday or Easter Monday: a release of all the pent-up tensions from the Lenten drought. My advice is: if you are going to give-up porn viewing – you must give it up for life. By all means, stop watching porn now – during this Grace-filled season of Lent, but remember – this is it. Especially, at this time of year, when we should be recollecting and meditating upon the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ – any pleasures of the flesh (including indulgence in particular foods, drinks, or entertainment) should be at a minimum or non-existent; and this naturally includes the sensual and the erotic. We must place ourselves, next to Our Blessed Lady, St. John, and St. Mary Magdalene, on the road to Calvary. We must witness all the horror which Christ endured: His scourging, many falls, and eventual Crucifixion. At such a solemn and heart wrenching event, would we feast upon the depraved? Would we pleasure ourselves? Would we mock Christ? For Our Lord suffers, every time we transgress and sin against Him. Therefore, to truly turn away from wickedness, we must embrace the Lord as Our Friend, Brother, and Savior. He is just not simply the God-head – dying for us, but a Man that we truly know, that we truly care for, and that we truly Love. When this happens, we would never think of defaming Him. Then, and only then, are we truly free.
