Thank you Bishop Michael Barber

Recently, Bishop Michael Barber of the Diocese of Oakland has been under fire for removing two popular priests from the Newman Hall Parish in Berkeley. One of the priests had publicly professed himself as gay. Consequently, the parish’s LGBT group avows: “We encourage and affirm our sexuality and spirituality in the Christian Faith through the Catholic tradition.” As a graduate of UC Berkeley (1994) I am not surprised by this declaration. By the time I was attending Cal, Catholicism, after years of liberal self-aggrandizing, dogmatic banishment, and moral relativism, had become completely irrelevant. But, even back then, I was aware about the progressive goings on at the campus Newman Center. First of all, it is a terrible example for a priest to identity himself as gay: it locks the person into a wounded orientation that is neither inherited nor God-given; secondly, to encourage and affirm a gay identity is tantamount to imprisonment of the soul within the disorder; lastly, those who are tied to the homosexual orientation must be charitably challenged – to look beyond gayness and to see the True destiny God has fashioned for us all. I pray for Bishop Barber and the future of the Newman Hall Parish.
