A character in the new children’s film “How to Train Your Dragon 2” will come out as gay. In one scene Gobber the Belch will watch a husband and wife bicker. He will then say: “This is why I never got married,” then, another character reacts with: “Yup, Gobber is coming out of the closet.” The first installment of “How To Train Your Dragon” was a massive success, making $500 million at the box office when it came out in 2010. The sequel is expected to make more when it is released in America on June 13, 2014. Not surprisingly, the film was directed by ex-Disney employee and openly gay filmmaker Dean DeBlois. This fits in with the homosexual subtext of many Disney films and their obsession with the socially persecuted misfit: from the ostracized Dumbo to the misunderstood Elsa in “Frozen.” They all mark a character who is misunderstood, sometimes abused, goes outside of the family for healing, finds solace with other like-minded dissenters, then returns to reform a prejudicial world. From within, God is banished and replaced by a vague and polymorphous belief in magic.
