Back when I was involved in the porn industry, the vast majority of the female porn stars I met came from decidedly dysfunctional families. The one who comes immediately to mind is Savannah; she came from a broken home, was molested as a child, and began dating a much older rock star while still in high school. The tortured existence of Savannah embodied the tumultuous lives of many other porn stars, namely: Shauna Grant, Traci Lords, and Jenna Jameson. All of these women confessed to early childhood trauma: rape, abuse, and or neglect. Now, there is a defined shift, beginning with those who are just entering the industry, and were children after the internet revolution of the late-1990s, who come to porn, not from broken homes, or with a past history of abuse, but who were exposed to porn at an early age. The latest victim, the infamous 18 year old Duke University porn actress, Belle Knox, who admitted that she started watching porn when she was 12. According to herself, she was raised in a devout Catholic home, and her parents are “floored” by her decision. A relative of Knox reported: “This is a tragedy in the family. The father is one of the best human beings I’ve ever met. He is just back from Afghanistan; he served his country, how awesome is that? He’s so proud of his daughter; there’s no way they could have known this was going on. It’s terrible. But they would never abandon their daughter. This is a nightmare what the family are going through.”
