High-profile Hollywood actress Ellen Page recently “came-out” as a lesbian. When such celebrities reveal their homosexuality, I usually like to look at their biographies and find out if there was anything unusual in their childhoods; there always is. In the case of Page: she graduated from a school run by a Western Tibetan strain of Buddhism (Shambhala) that, according to its founder, promotes “[the] ideal of secular enlightenment, that is, the possibility of uplifting our personal existence and that of others without the help of any religious outlook.” As reported in the official Shambhala news magazine, the organization accepts all forms of homosexuality and homosexual practices. They perceive individual approval of homosexuality as a step towards enlightenment: “In enlightened society human relationships foster wakefulness which naturally leads to insight. When we are awake, we appreciate the simple goodness of being alive…enlightenment means completely waking up to our beating hearts.” Just as in heterosexual relationships, homosexual couplings have the same substantial power. In a recent interview, Page described how the teachings of American Shambhala Buddhist nun Pema Chodron was a major influence over her life as she was introduced to her “at a pretty young age.” When the Dalai Lama famously said: “From a Buddhist point of view, men-to-men and women-to-women is generally considered sexual misconduct,” Chodron quickly and decisively disagreed. Questioned about those comments from the Dalai Lama, Chodron remarked: “Well, listen. I have so much respect for the Dalai Lama and I think that's where people get stuck…But aside from all that, as Buddhism comes to the West, Western Buddhist teachers simply don't buy that. It's as if Asian teachers said that women were inferior or something. I mean, it's absurd. That's all there is to it. It's just ridiculous…And I'm not alone, it's not something unique with me. Western teachers, coming from this culture, we see things pretty differently on certain issues and this is one, for sure.” This philosophy, which seeks to remove “any religious outlook” is like all New-Age beliefs in that it requires very little from its adherents; in other words – there is an absence of moral dogma. And, as Chodron describes, it’s also ever-changing and subject to regional and local traditions. Unlike God, there is no continuity. Different people, in different parts of the world, and at different times – can believe in divergent things. There is no TRUTH. For instance, the founder of Shambhala, Chögyam Trungpa, was known to cultivate numerous sexual liaisons with his female students, use illegal drugs, and engage in ceremonial orgies. An early follow of Trungpa was gay poet and vocal NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association) supporter Allen Ginsberg.
