Media Memories of the 1970s

The other day, a friend and I were discussing some of our pop-culture memories of the 1970s. Those that were indelibly imprinted upon my then boy brain were: the infamous “Charlie’s Angels” go to prison episode, the “Charlie” perfume commercials of Shelley Hack, and a huge 6 foot life-size poster of amazon Susan Anton that hung in my brother’s room. Over 30 years later, I remarked how scary it was that I could immediately recall details about television programs, the lyrics of Village People songs, and the names of various “Playboy” bunnies. I made the comment: that is why children can learn a second language easier than adults; as their minds are still very malleable. Nowadays, those 70s “jiggle” shows and soft-core magazines feel almost innocent when compared to today’s hardcore celebrity antics, yet, they did lay the ground work for the later emergence of Madonna, porn home-theater, and the trend of underwear as outerwear. On a personal level, it was my first course in desensitization: priming me to someday delve into X-rated films, sex clubs, and homosexuality. They gave me just a taste of what I would subsequently crave. It’s frightening to imagine what kinds of perversions the youth of today, who have images of Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga stamped on their psyche, will one day come up with. Right now, we are just getting a forewarning: the horrendous rise in child pornography, the strange phenomena of teen “sexting,” and the epidemic of adolescent STDs.
