There have been pivotal moments in the history of entertainment and sex: Marilyn Monroe standing on top of a subway grate and her dress flying over her head, Raquel Welch emerging from the ocean in a fur-bikini, Bo Derek in cornrows running down the beach, and Madonna writhing on the stage floor in a wedding dress. Despite their overtly provocative nature, some of those images proved more lasting and culturally significant than others. Today, in an age where cyber-seconds of fame have replaced genuine artistry, the flash of shock gets more notice than thoughtful self-expression. The undeniable current queen of American pop-culture is Miley Cyrus. Recently, she has jumped on the “selfie” rage and taken to posting pictures of herself just emerged from the shower. It’s a horrifying precedent: the complete destruction of the border between private and public space. For, we now live in a universe that keeps everything open for public consumption – there is no more social structure of expected conduct and etiquette. Nothing is off limits. And, sadly, the public, addicted to pornography, continually demands further access to the famous and the infamous. Years from now, we will still be reeling from the repercussions: as the children of Generation-Twerk mutate into disturbed and psychotic human beings. This is truly a world gone mad.
