Over the past few days, three porn actors have tested positive for HIV: Cameron Bay, Rod Daily, and now a third unidentified person. On a strange side-note: actor Daily announced his status via Twitter: “Drumroll please!! I’m 32 years old and I’m HIV positive. Acute HIV, which means I recently was infected. For that I am blessed.” “I’m blessed for the fact that I caught it so early that I can blast that s**t with meds.” His bizarrely cavalier and unemotional attitude I first saw emerging in the late-1990s, when I was on my way out of porn, and men all around me who became HIV+, through a regime of anti-viral cocktails, began to live much longer lives without the fear of imminent death. This was so different from the gay world I walked into just a decade before. When, in the late-80s and 90s, the still palpable fear of AIDS was everywhere. Sadly, the attitude of Daily is pretty commonplace among the gay youth of today. They live for the now, and assume that medical science will take care of the rest. Still, despite the blustery rhetoric coming from the gay community, in the US - the median age for HIV deaths is 42 years old. This is partly due to AIDS sufferers being incredibly susceptible to many opportunistic infections, including: Viral Hepatitis, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and HPV-Associated Cancers.
