Many readers have asked me what I mean by the term “gay propaganda.” To be succinct, gay propaganda is any form of visual or written media that attempts to create a certain image of the homosexual lifestyle that is not based on reality. For example, one of the most egregious instances was the poster for the 2009 Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco. The art style mimics the antique fruit crate labels of the 1920s and 30s, that were collected by the poor, and originally drew hapless Midwesterners, during the Great Depression, to California in search of a better life in the land of milk and honey; John Steinbeck later wrote about what they actually found in his masterpiece “The Grapes of Wrath.” The 2009 picture incorporates all the gay icons of the last Century: the happy fantasy-land of “The Wizard of Oz,” the California beach muscle man, and the escapist beauty of disco. There are also subtle shades of the lies that originally drew me to San Francisco: my childhood exposure to the music and depictions of gay life as represented by The Village People. As a lonely and insecure young boy, looking at their album covers, they seemed like the kind of guys I longed to be with. Sadly, the falsehood continues to be churned out – and an endless stream of new recruits head West. Waiting for them? Disease, disappointment, and death.
