The Sexism of Sleaziness: Robin Thicke vs. Miley Cyrus

It’s interesting to read all of the criticism surrounding Miley Cyrus and the MTV Awards, but not a word about the equally slutty performance of Robin Thicke. I am fairly unfamiliar with both, and didn’t realize the context behind the VMA performance: the vicious and ugly music video for Thicke’s song “Blurred Lines.” After seeing it, the 36-year old Thicke should be as equally castigated as the stupid 20-year old Cyrus; even more so. The double standard reminds me of the knee-jerk tendency to heap blame upon the very young actresses in porn, and not the much older, and predominantly male, pornography-pushers. I think this is due to the fact that it’s easier to blame the women: as they are often the more overtly sexual and public face of societal decay. The Thicke video is the preeminent example: while he stands around in an expensive suit, masked by large sunglasses, looking detached and cool, the barely-legal half-dressed (and naked in the un-censored version; which I did not watch) girls prance around him. He is the ultimate porn purveyor: selling sleazy sex while somehow remaining squeaky clean - leaving the dirty work to others, but still reaping the rewards.
