Wolverine: The Formulaic Superhero as a Secular Pseudo-Jesus

I have not shared the countries current obsession with superhero films. Last year, by a wide margin, the #1 Box Office hit was “The Avengers.” This year, “Iron Man 3” and “Man of Steel” are so far set to be the big winners. Now, the “X-Men” series returns with “Wolverine.” Besides being incredibly predictable and formulaic, “Wolverine” also continues the rather disturbing trend of comic book characters as a new Messianic Jesus. There is a long history of this principle in the pop-lexicon; all the way back to the first appearance of Superman in “Action Comics” from 1938. But, in reality, it all goes even further into the past starting with the Ancient Greeks and their preoccupation with the various highs and lows of such immortals and near-immortals as Hercules, Odysseus, and Achilles. But, the new incarnation of fantasy idols are different from those, as they are completely divorced from any and all cultural context. This is nowhere more evident in the current “Wolverine,” with a huge and hulking Hugh Jackman slashing his way through a stereotypical mechanized Japan. It strongly reminds me of the perennially annoying “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” a film I loathed even as a kid, with its ugly looking alien that drops to Earth and brings harmony and healing to the clichéd stupid American suburbanites. In contemporary society, these false icons have replaced the image of God. Their visage is emblazoned everywhere, from lunchboxes to pillow-cases. Children are especially susceptible. Shallow CGI-created stars have the trappings of God, but are commercially structured products emptied of meaning. I saw this come to life in “Wolverine:” when the mutant king is shot full of multiple arrows, mimicking the numerous paintings of the martyr St. Sebastian. Only, unlike the real champion, who truly gave his life and rose to glory in Heaven, Wolverine miraculously arises, saves the simpering girl, and continues onto more adventures; and another sequel.
