Best remembered for her debut performance in “The Piano,” for which she won the Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress at age 11, Anna Paquin went on to superstardom as the mutant Rogue in three of the “X-Men” films. Now, Paquin stars in the HBO series “True Blood.” The show has been the biggest ratings winner for HBO since “The Sopranos.” Heavily laden with violence and sex, “True Blood” is a sort of “Twin Peaks” meets “Interview with a Vampire” meets “Behind the Green Door.” Currently, Paquin went completely naked, blood dripping from her mouth, while filming a scene where she has sex with a man whose been tied to a gravestone. But, this is not the first time, she, and two of her male costars, got all blood-spattered for a 2010 cover of “Rolling Stone.” This reminds me of the myriads of cults which sprung up in Imperial Rome: Mithras, Cybele, Isis; all esoteric mystery religious which often included strange sex and blood rituals. This is also seen in the contemporary rage for porn which depicts extreme sexual acts such as bondage, rape, and anal sex. “True Blood” belongs in the same category as those, but, this just isn’t porn: it’s hardcore satanic porn; disguised as main-stream entertainment. In a bizarre twist: both “True Blood” and Paquin were nominated for 2012 Teen Choice Awards.
Note: Anna Paquin, a few months before she married one of her male “True Blood” costars, revealed that she was bisexual.
