The English Edwardian painter Glyn Warren Philpot (1884-1937) is a new favorite of mine. I just started doing research on him, but his life was as fascinating as his works. He was born an Anglican, but later converted to Roman Catholicism. He remained a resolute Catholic for his entire life, while all-the-time struggling with homosexuality. The above painting, Repose on the Flight into Egypt, is really extraordinary. Here, one can see the struggle between the sacred and the ever-present profane longings of the body. The Holy Family rests among the ruins of Egypt, as evil little demons, centaurs, and gryphons hover about their camp-site. It's a powerful reminder to us all of the inherent dangers of the physical world; where the forces of evil constantly wait to devour the proud and the complacent. I will post future blogs on this great artist.
