A Catholic parish on Long Island has removed a man from his roles as lector and religious-education instructor after the local diocese was informed that the man had joined his homosexual partner in a “marriage” ceremony.
While I completely agree with the action taken by this church, I must also state that this policy must absolutely apply to heterosexuals as well. When I was in 29, freshly out of porn, and trying to work myself back into the local church of my childhood, I became very annoyed by the hypocrisy in the Church. In just my little section of the Catholic world, I knew a woman who was shacked-up with her boyfriend and still functioned as a extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, and another person, in the same situation, who served as a lector. If churches are going to single out gays, who are apostates, for castigation, they must rightly do the same when confronted by heterosexuals who refuse to live according to the Laws of God. And, should that also include heterosexuals who: support abortion rights, take contraceptives, and or diverge on other critical dogmas of the Church? If that were the case, I wonder how crowded the sanctuary would then be with lay people.
